Who We Are

The University of California Multi-Campus Research Project (MRP) in Mediterranean Studies brings together faculty and graduate students from across the UC campuses and other academic institutions and across disciplines dedicated to the study of Mediterranean societies and cultures and their role in World History and the History of "the West." Over 5 years quarterly workshops and seminars have taken place across UC campuses, including other conferences, sessions, and collaborations with other participating institutions. Thanks to our directors Brian A. Catlos (History) and Sharon Kinoshita (Literature) of UC Santa Cruz, members and participants, as well as funding administered by the UC Santa Cruz Institute for Humanities Research we have created a large network for scholars of the Mediterranean to collaborate and share knowledge and research.

Research

On our Mediterranean Seminar site we have updates of existing and continuing research by our members made possible by the collaboration in the MRP in Mediterranean Studies.

Summer Institute

Spend the Summer in Barcelona! Our Institute involves a rethinking of the history of the later Middle Ages (c. 1000–1500) through the optic of the Mediterranean, emphasizing questions of religious and ethnic pluralisms, cultural contact, hybridity, transculturation, and the negotiation of identities.
